Cheapest free zone in the UAE: what it really costs
Everyone wants the cheapest free zone — but the lowest sticker price isn't always the lowest total cost, and the wrong bargain can cost you visas or a bank account. Here's an honest look at the genuinely affordable UAE free zones, the hidden extras to watch, and how to pick the one that's cheapest for you.

The genuinely affordable free zones
The UAE has more than 45 free zones, and several compete hard on price. The most budget-friendly are typically in the northern emirates and Sharjah, where overheads are lower. With Ambizent, a free-zone licence starts from around AED 4,888 for a zero-visa package — and the following zones are consistently among the most cost-effective:
- SHAMS & SPC (Sharjah) — popular with startups, media and freelancers for their low entry cost and simple setup.
- Ajman Free Zone — long known as a budget-friendly option for cost-conscious founders.
- RAKEZ (Ras Al Khaimah) — affordable with a very wide activity list, strong for SMEs and industrial use.
- IFZA (Dubai) — a flexible, competitively priced all-rounder if you specifically want a Dubai licence.
- Meydan (Dubai) — a cost-effective way to get a prestigious Dubai address for services and e-commerce.

The hidden costs that make ‘cheap’ expensive
A low licence price is only part of the picture. Budget for the extras that catch people out: visa costs (entry permit, medical, Emirates ID), a larger office or desk if you need more visas, name reservation and approvals, Corporate Tax registration and VAT where applicable, and annual renewal. A rock-bottom zero-visa licence isn't a bargain if it can't support the team you actually need. For the full breakdown, see our guide to the cost of business setup in the UAE.
When the cheapest zone is a false economy
Two things matter more than saving a few hundred dirhams. First, visa capacity: the cheapest package often includes zero or very few visas, and upgrading later can cost more than choosing the right package up front. Second, and most overlooked, banking: some zones are viewed more favourably by banks than others, and the cheapest zone can make opening a corporate bank account harder. A licence you can't bank isn't cheap — it's unusable.
How to choose the right one for you
The genuinely cheapest option is the one that meets your real needs at the lowest total cost: the right activities, enough visas for your plans, and a zone that banks will engage with. Rather than chase the lowest headline price, match the zone to your business — which is exactly what we do.
